Schur-Narula is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition Better Luck Next Time, with recent works from Luther Kroman and George Leo Sanders.
In their works, both Sanders and Kroman employ the visual language of athletics, surrounding these images of sports and games with a sort of wistful humor. Many pieces feature isolated images, scenes that, despite having been removed from context, are instantly recognizable. These are blackboards, gym mats, baseball diamond lines that, in their reference to childhood, create a strong nostalgia; however, the works also succeed in pulling this world of games into the present, making them the scene of a dialogue about the ways in which we choose to spend our time.
Both Sanders’s and Kroman’s canvases are devoid of biological forms and yet thoroughly imbued with a sense of the human. This simultaneous absence/presence adds to the bittersweet humor of the works, a quality seen in pieces like Kroman’s Erased or Sanders’s X’s and O’s. Through both the subject matter and the artists’ deliberate technique, the canvases become literal and figurative fields of human activity.
Luther Kroman (USA, b. 1983) currently lives and works in Kansas City, MO. He received his BFA in Painting and Art History from The Kansas City Art Institute in 2009 and his MFA in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia in 2011. His work focuses on ideas of success and failure.
George Leo Sanders (USA, b. 1987) is a Santa Barbara, California-based painter who strives to convert wasted time into positive productivity, or 'time well spent'. He received his B.A. from Bard College in 2010 and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
